A carrier with 6 trucks. A tradesman with 4 vans. An SME that delivers its own orders. On paper, a TMS \u2014 transport management software \u2014 could save them valuable time every week: fewer empty kilometres, fewer routing errors, fewer calls to find out where a delivery stands. <\/p>\n

In practice, very few companies of this kind use one. That’s no coincidence, and it’s certainly not because the need doesn’t exist.<\/p>\n<\/div>

A problem bigger than the transport sector alone<\/h2><\/div>

This observation isn’t limited to transport. According to the Barom\u00e8tre France Num<\/a>, which measures the digital maturity of French companies every year, only 10.5%<\/strong> of companies with fewer than 10 employees have adopted a management and steering tool \u2014 compared with 37.5%<\/strong> for those with more than 10 employees. The smallest structures thus remain up to three times less equipped than the others. <\/p>\n

This figure says something important: the delay isn’t specific to transport. It’s a structural phenomenon affecting all very small businesses confronted with management tools designed for a different scale than theirs.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Tools designed for large fleets, not for 3 trucks<\/h2><\/div>

The TMS products on the market have, historically, never targeted small operations. Their sales model remains largely inherited from the world of traditional enterprise software:<\/p>\n<\/div>

  • <\/i><\/span>
    A sales rep to contact before even seeing the product<\/div><\/li>
  • <\/i><\/span>
    Une d\u00e9monstration \u00e0 programmer, souvent plusieurs jours apr\u00e8s le premier contact<\/div><\/li>
  • <\/i><\/span>
    A quote to negotiate, with pricing grids designed for fleets of dozens of vehicles<\/div><\/li>
  • <\/i><\/span>
    Several days of training before the team can actually use it<\/div><\/li><\/ul>

    For a six-truck company, this process represents more friction than benefit. The time invested in the buying process far exceeds the time you hope to save once the tool is in place \u2014 assuming the owner even has time to devote to it.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    The result: Excel, paper, and the phone<\/h2><\/div>

    For lack of a genuinely accessible alternative, most small fleets keep organising their routes with whatever tools they have at hand: a spreadsheet edited by hand every morning, a printed route sheet, or a simple phone call to the driver to find out where they are.<\/p>\n

    This isn’t a choice made for comfort. It’s a default choice, for lack of a tool designed for their size and pace of work. The owner of a small transport operation has neither the time to go through a classic sales cycle, nor the budget for a TMS built for a hundred vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    What this really reveals<\/h2><\/div>

    The issue, then, isn’t a lack of technological solutions \u2014 the TMS market has existed for decades. The real issue is the mismatch between the existing offer and the operational reality of small structures: their need for simplicity, quick onboarding, and an entry cost proportional to their size. <\/p>\n

    As long as this mismatch persists, the digitalisation gap measured by France Num among very small businesses will keep showing up very concretely in how a tradesman or a small carrier organises their day: by hand, rather than with a tool designed for them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
